The 23rd Thing!
Hello

The end is here!! I thought I would never reach it, especially in the time allocated. It has been a long and sometimes winding journey that for the most part I have enjoyed. I have learnt from these activities, I am not sure how if I will use this knowledge in the future but the option is there.

My favourite activity; Youtube (who would of guessed?). I do not think I need to explain about Youtube (at least I'm not addicted!). Otherwise it would have to be Librarything. It appeals to my inner librarian, not that I have the energy to catalogue my library.

I do not think that has affected my life long learning goals, but it has made me aware of the amount of stuff (for the lack of a better word) on the www and the amount of people who use it.

The one major problem I had with the learning 2.0 is the amount of time each activity took. It was not just a half hour to forty five minutes to read the information, complete the activity then write a blog about it. It was closer to one hour (especially the larger activities towards the end).

I did enjoy this completing this program, thank you for the chance of completing this activity, I hope you enjoyed the journey.

I am out of here.

#22 - Audiobooks
Hello

An awareness of audio books has risen during the last few years, mainly due to the rise of MP3 players especially IPODs as well as memory sticks. The ease and convenience of being able to carry the large amount of information now has made audio books a more popular option.

The World Ebook Fair site is a great starting point to getting Ebooks for your own personal use, while Netlibrary and Overdrive could be beneficial to any public library. Before the introduction of Netlibrary or Overdrive it would be beneficial to the library to first find out who are using the audio books and if they are comfortable with technology as there would be no point in having a subscription if patrons will not use it.
The only drawback from World Ebook fair is its limited selection of titles.

Thanks

#21 - Podcasts
Hello

Almost to the end of our journey together (did I hear a sigh of relief??), with the end in sight I look forward to exploring podcast.

To begin with, I have heard of but have not used podcast mainly due commercial radio and just general Internet usage. There are certain radio programs that you have been podcast, so if you don't have to miss it even if you are unable to listen at the time of the broadcast, it's almost like taping your favourite TV show to watch later.

I could not get the Yahoo! What is a podcast tutorial to work but it was interesting to see that we can search Yahoo! for audio, it should of been obvious that it was possible but I must admit I had never really thought about it before.

Podcast.net was very easy to use, but you (meaning that I did obviously!) could get sidetracked very easily (not as bad as Youtube however). The addition of a podcast to your bloglines account is simple, thankfully and I added a weight loss podcast to my bloglines account, called easy weight loss (they have hopes!). I did not like the podcastalley.com website, it was too busy and it was more complex to add an rss feed to your bloglines account. Ease of use is very important with new technology. Yahoo! Podcast would be a great way to find podcast as it looks simple and easy to use.

Well that was an interesting experience. I can see how podcasts can be useful. I do not really know how it would work in a library for the benefit of patrons and staff however.

That's it for now. Have a great day!

#20 - Youtube!!
Hello

Before I start talking about this weeks learning 2.0 activity I must admit two things, 1 I love You tube and 2 I can waste so much time on You tube just looking around, it is so much fun and you can always find something new and interesting!

Too many choices!!! How am I suppose to choose one video to show?? I really wanted to choose a video clip to a Ciara song, titled Like a boy but I was not able so here is the link if you want to have a look. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFRuUJR4LPI. OK then here is another choice

Aren't they cute???

I love Staffies!! Especially English.

OK, back to work for me otherwise I will spend too much time playing.
Thanks

#19 Discovering Web 2.0 tools
Web 2.0 Tools! How do you choose just one?? I must admit, I could not choose one so I had a look at a couple and here are my thoughts on them.

PEERtrainer www.peertrainer.com ; fascinating concept, could be very useful and helpful to people wanting to loose weight/get fit and be healthy. It is free to join but it is an American site so everything in pounds and I am not sure if you will be able to find any Aussies on the site.

Judy's Book www.judysbook.com ; a place to find out bargain locations and vouchers. great idea but once again it is an American site so I could not find any vouchers for my local area :(

ThinkFree www.thinkfree.com/common/main.tfo ; an online alternative to Microsoft office. I had to have a look at this one after doing zoho for the last activity and I am impressed. I especially fancy the program that enables you to use your IPOD as a portable PowerPoint® Presentation Graphics System, that could be very handy and yet another use for your IPOD. This could be very useful in a library as it can give different options to staff and patrons. That is what I think the learning 2.0 has been about, showing staff different options for their own use and so they can pass on the information to patrons.

Biblio www.biblio.com can help you find out of print books. I enjoyed having a look and could be very useful in finding particular items for patrons that was not available in the library.

I really enjoyed today's activity, I hope you enjoyed it as well.
Thanks

18# web based applications
#18 Web based applications

Excellant idea. The ability to access your documents from any pc (that has internet obviously) is wonderful. No more forgetting your memory stick and no more floppy disks (yes they are still being used). I do not think it will make office obsolete, but it is very good to have the choice.

innocent Well, I have to go have a another look (play) at zoho so I will leave you to it.

Thanks

#17 Playing around with PBWiki
Hello

Playing around with PB Wiki was interesting. It is an excellent community site, but with anyone being able to alter the information there could be problems.
The PB Wiki Tour video did not work very well, however the Learn How To PB wiki had some useful information.

I added my blog to the favourite blogs page as well gaining a recommendation from the favourite books, I had a look at the favourite animals (too many dogs!) and I added EBay as my favourite web tools, I do enjoy using EBay especially with Christmas just around the corner (I am sorry, but yes I had to use the C word.)

Thanks for visiting

16# - Wiki
Hello and welcome to the world of wiki. Before starting this topic, I knew about wikipedia and how anyone cad add or alter the information on the site but I did not know that there was people using wiki as a tool to gather information, exchange information and for social reasons (it has become a community hub).

SJCPL Subject Guides – a pathfinder wiki developed by the St. Joseph County Public Library system. Was interesting, I think it paid too much attention to giving information about local businesses rather than helping people find information. I did like the information about voting, I think we could use that (I know I could).
BookLoversWiki, Princeton Public Library excellent idea, great layout , needs more reviews (especially sci-fi and fantasy) this would be an excellent way of people communicating with each other without having to join book clubs or leave their house for that matter.
Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki, is a great tool that can be used for the library, especially with the examples and explanations to help guide the way.

I like the idea of having a wiki full of book reviews from library users and staff. It would be an entertaining way of choosing new books and authors. It could be also a way of finding out if there are people around with similar interests.
Also it could be used as a community notice board.

Well, I did learn something today, so that is enough for now.

15# Library 2.0 - It's many things to many people
Library 2.0 - It's many things to many people. The focus of the perspectives is all an how the web and technology will change libraries and how people use them. I do not believe that it is going to be that big a change straight away, there are small changes occurring even now but in the big picture people will still want access the written word in books not just on the computer/mobile phone/ipod etc. The library is a part of the community especially for the older and youngest members. We do have to keep up with technology as well as staying current with our skills. It's not so great to have up to date technology that staff do not have the skills or knowledge to use, that is also another cost of technology; training.

The library of the future might be a computer but it is not here yet, so we need to get people into the libraries now so they will still be around in the future!

14# Technorati
Hello

Blogging is such a world wide phenomenon, it is no surprise that it has needed to have its own search engine and tracking system. I do have to wonder what will happen to these blogs when people get sick of them, do they disappear or do they float around the Internet/blogosphere taking up people's space and time??? Will our great grand kids be able to look at these blogs, and would we want them to??

Enough questions here are some answers.
Searching "learning 2.0" in blog posts, tags and blog directory did have different results. The better results were received when searching the tags (in my opinion). The searching in the entire post had very poor results.
The ability to see what other people are looking at, in popular, is a fascinating look into what interests people as well as being able to find something that you would not of thought of otherwise.

That's all for today, have a great day.

13 # Del.icio.us
The idea and use of del.icio.us as a social bookmarking manager which allows you to bookmark a web page and add tags to categorize your bookmarks is excellent. The ability to bookmark a large number of websites and access them from different computers would be beneficial to large portion of Internet users, because how many of use just use the one computer???

Activity; The comments that are posted for PLCMCL2 are very basic not very interesting at all. I had a look at LibraryTechtonics: Tagging on Flickr & del.icio.us. Here are some tags that have been used; library2.0, del.icio.us, libraries, tagging and librarylearning.

Thanks for joining me
